Typical diet book. Really nothing new. I was really looking for something super simple and direct like, specifically what to eat at each meal for a couple of weeks.
If you are a DIABETIC buy this book !!!!!!! I have beat DIABETES !!!! I AM SERIOUS I HAVE !! You do have to watch what you eat and at least do a lot of wlking if your sitting on you hinny at work all day !! I lost 30 lbs down from 326 to 290 )
The book is a good "how to" for living with diabetes. It's not so much a diet, although you will lose weight immediately following the advice in the book. If you're looking for recipes, don't look here. This book is more a strategy for living better with the condition. The advice is very simple and easy to adopt.
Having Diabetes 2 I've been searching for an all-inclusive book of sound medical information in layperson's terminology, along with practical advice including charts, menu planning and motivational techniques. This book has it all in an easily readable format. I needed help creating menus for a 1200 calorie diet for weight loss. And I was able to do that by looking at several chapters.
This has been the help I've needed!
The only downside of the book is that each chapter is written by a different professional (doctors, dietitians etc.) so there was repetition. The book is large with illustrations and large print.
This is an outstanding book that covers it all. I'd highly recommend it.
This review is specifically for the journal. I liked this journal so much I'm ordering a second one. I didn't use everything on every page, I used what I felt would work for me - mainly tracking my weight, calorie intake, daily goals and activity. My results with my first journal by religiously writing what I ate every day and the calories, and keeping my calories at or under the limit I set, I lost 17 lbs.

Could I have done the same thing in just a notebook? Yes, but there's something about this journal that makes me want to track everything every day without fail. The only fault I find with it is I wish they'd used colors light enough to write notes in for the empty space on the pages.

Now, on to my next weight loss!
I'm not overweight, but after having gestational diabetes during my pregnancies, I felt it was time to get back on track with eating healthy now that my baby is a little bigger and I have more time (ha!) to worry about myself. This book is dedicated to weight loss, so I have to kind of alter some of the tips, but for the most part it makes eating healthy really easy. When I was pregnant, I was constantly counting carbs and logging information, but this book makes eating healthy very easy. Once you memorize the portion sizes for each food pyramid section and figure out your caloric intake, you can just break it down easily into meals (1 carb portion here, 1 protein/dairy portion there, etc). No counting calories! It's really easy. And honestly, you really get used to eating only whole grain carbs. They tend to fill you up more!
One thing that I do a little differently is include one more portion of dairy/protein into my day than suggested (lean chicken, piece of cheese, etc). I feel the protein/dairy portions are important for muscle and bones...
I needed a diet re-set and this was it! This is a great companion to the Mayo Clinic Diabetes Diet. I think the intention was for those with Type 2 Diabetes, but should have been marketed for anyone struggling with weight issues. This journal was well thought out and includes sections for documenting personal information, lose-it, live-it and tips on how to stay motivated to change your lifestyle. The Mayo Clinic does use food exchange for loss/maintenance and points out the differences between that used by the Diabetic Association and what they recommend for Good Health. ie beans are counted as protein, not carbohydrate and dairy is also considered a protein and no need to measure / weigh food. There is a lot to like about this journal; 1. It feels like the Truth. 2. There isn't 217 pages of the exact same page; but rather sections that keep you on track and motivated.
